Introduction

As electric vehicles (EV’s) continue to gain popularity in the UAE, it’s crucial for EV owners to have the right EV charger and its correct installation for their homes. At private villas, the installation is mostly hassle free and installation is fairly simple. However, there are specific considerations to keep in mind, especially when dealing with facilities management companies and Owners Association Companies that manage the building where the charger will be installed.

When it comes to installing a home charger for your electric vehicle, there are several requirements that need to be considered. Ensuring that these requirements are met will help ensure a safe and efficient charging experience. Here are the key requirements for a home charger installation:

Electrical Capacity:

The electrical capacity of your home must be able to support the charging demands of an electric vehicle. This includes having an adequate electrical panel with available circuit capacity and sufficient power. It is recommended to consult with a professional company, that specializes in the field, to assess your electrical system and determine if any upgrades or modifications are needed.

Dedicated Circuit:

An electric vehicle charger requires a dedicated circuit to make sure that it has a consistent and uninterrupted power supply. This means the circuit used for charging should not be shared with other high-power appliances or outlets. A dedicated circuit helps prevent circuit overloads and ensures safe charging.

Voltage and Amperage:

Different electric vehicle chargers require specific voltage and amperage ratings. Most home chargers operate at 400 volts (V) and either 16 or 32 amperes (A). It is important to select a charger that is compatible with your electrical system’s voltage and amperage capabilities.

Wiring and Conduit:

Proper wiring and conduit are essential for a safe and reliable home charger installation. The wiring should be appropriately sized to handle the charger’s power requirements and installed following local electrical codes. Additionally, the conduit may be necessary to protect and organize the wiring, ensuring it is safely routed from the electrical panel to the charging location.

Mounting Location:

The charger should be installed in a suitable location that allows for easy access and safe operation. It is typically installed in a garage, carport, or near the parking area. Consideration should be given to factors such as proximity to the electrical panel, protection from the elements, and convenience for charging your vehicle.

Permits and Inspections:

Depending on your location in the UAE, obtaining permits and scheduling inspections may be necessary before and after the installation of a home charger. It is important to comply with any permitting requirements and ensure that the installation meets local safety standards. Copak has a specialized team to acquire authorities’ approvals for the installation works where needed.

Professional Installation:

To ensure a safe and compliant installation, it is strongly recommended to hire a licensed electrician with experience in electric vehicle charger installations. They have the expertise to handle the electrical work, assess your specific requirements, and ensure all safety protocols are followed.

By adhering to these requirements, you can ensure a successful and reliable installation of a home charger for your electric vehicle. Remember, it is essential to consult with professionals and follow local electrical codes and regulations to ensure a safe and efficient charging setup. At Copak, our team of experts is ready to assist you in navigating the installation process, from assessing your electrical system to recommending the right charger and providing professional installation services. Consult with Facilities Management Companies

Before installing an EV charger in a building, it is crucial to speak with the facilities management company responsible for maintaining the property. Some facilities management companies or Owners Association Companies may have specific guidelines or restrictions regarding the connection of EV chargers from the common electrical room of the building. In such cases, the installation process can be more challenging and costly.

Understand the Building’s Policies:

It’s essential to thoroughly understand the policies and regulations of the building where you plan to install the EV charger. Some buildings may allow power supply connections directly from the electrical panel of the car owner, while others may have restrictions. By understanding the building’s policies, you can determine the feasibility and complexity of the installation process.

Discuss Options with the Facilities Management Company:

Engage in discussion with the facilities management company or Owners Association Company to explore possible solutions for installing an EV charger. In some cases, they may be willing to make accommodations or provide alternative installation options that comply with the building’s regulations. It’s essential to communicate your intentions and work together to find a suitable arrangement.

Consider the Cost and Complexity:

Installing an EV charger from the common electrical room of a building may involve additional costs and complexities due to the need for specialized electrical work. This could include routing power supply cables and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Be prepared to assess the associated expenses and potential challenges when deciding on the installation location.

Charger’s Compatibility with the Car

Universal Socket-Type Charger

In terms of charger compatibility, it’s essential to understand the different types of connectors used for DC and AC charging. In the UAE, DC chargers typically utilize the CCS2 connector, while North American specification cars are often equipped with CCS1 connectors.Additionally, there are other standard connectors, such as CHAdeMO and CCS1, that are worth mentioning.

When it comes to AC chargers, there are three main connector types, with the standard connector in electric cars in the UAE being Type-2. This connector is also known as the Mennekes connector. The other two connector types are Type-1 and GB/T connectors. Let’s explore these connectors in more detail:

DC Charger Connectors:

CCS2 (Combined Charging System 2): This is the standard connector used for DC fast charging in the UAE. It combines both AC and DC charging capabilities and is widely supported by electric vehicle manufacturers.

CCS1 (Combined Charging System 1): This connector is commonly used in North American specification electric vehicles. It is similar to CCS2 but has a different physical design.

Note: CHAdeMO is another DC fast charging connector used by some electric vehicle manufacturers, but it is not as widely supported as CCS connectors in the UAE.

AC Charger Connectors:

Type-2 Connector (Mennekes Connector): This is the standard connector used for AC charging in electric vehicles in the UAE. It features a compact, ergonomic design and is compatible with a range of charging capacities. Any car purchased from the dealership in the UAE will come with a Type-2 connector as a standard. To charge these kinds of cars at public chargers, the car owner needs to carry a Type-2 portable charging cable.

Type-1 Connector (J1772 Connector): This connector is primarily used in North American and Japanese electric vehicles for AC charging. It has a different physical design compared to Type-2. Hummer EV is a famous vehicle that is fitted with a Type-1 connector. Some people import their Tesla cars from the US. These Tesla cars also come with Type-1 connectors. Type-1 connectors can work only with a single-phase power supply. In other words, the maximum power these cars can take is only 7.4 KW.

GB/T Connector: This connector is commonly used in China for AC charging. It is gradually gaining popularity and is supported by some electric vehicle models. In UAE, Volkswagen ID 4 and ID 6 are the most famous vehicles that are fitted with GB/T connectors. The owners of these vehicles need to carry a portable GB/T Type Charging Cable.

EV Charging Accessories

It’s important to note that electric vehicles may have different connector types depending on their origin, region-specific specifications, and manufacturer preferences. When considering an EV charger installation, it’s crucial to ensure compatibility between the charger and the vehicle’s charging connector. In UAE, all the chargers with permanently attached charging cables come with Type-2 Connectors. Therefore, if your EV has a different connector, then it’s recommended to install a charger that comes with an output socket instead of a permanently attached charging cable. A portable charging cable with a GB/T or a Type-1 connector would be required to charge an EV with the socket-type chargers.

At Copak, we understand the significance of charger compatibility and can guide you in selecting the appropriate charger with the right connector for your electric vehicle. Our experienced team can assist in determining the suitable charger for your specific needs, taking into account the connector type and charging requirements of your vehicle.
